Current Federal Legislation
H.R. 195 (Stearns, R-FL) – The Informed Choice Act makes $3 million available in grants to non-profit clinics for ultrasound equipment. Those who receive the grants would be required to show the woman a live ultrasound image of the unborn baby and give her a general anatomical and physiological description of his or her characteristics.
H.R. 213 (Wilson, R-SC) – The Adoption Tax Credit makes permanent the $10,000 child adoption tax credit, which is set to expire in 2010. Costs that may be covered include attorney’s fees, reasonable and necessary adoption fees, court costs, traveling costs, and other costs directly relating to the legal adoption of an eligible child.
H.R. 605 (Davis, D-TN) – The Pregnant Woman Support Act provides support for pregnant women in order to reduce the number of abortions in our nation by focusing on meeting the needs of pregnant women and providing support for those who want to bring their children to term.
H.R. 614 (Pence, R-IN) – The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act establishes program integrity in domestic family planning programs by withholding family planning grants from organizations that perform abortions.
H.R. 634 (Ros-Lehtinen, R-FL) – The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act makes it a federal offense to transport a minor across state lines for an abortion in order to circumvent state parental involvement laws and places additional requirements on abortion providers.
H.R. 636 (Bachmann, R-MN) – The Positive Alternatives Act makes permanent the state option to fund centers that provide alternatives to abortion.
H.R. 877 (Forbes, R-VA, Lipinski, D-IL) – The Patients First Act promotes stem cell research and clinical trials most likely to benefit human patients by promoting ethical non-controversial research. Examples of such research include projects including adult stem cells, cells from amniotic fluid and embryonic-like stem cells from skin cells. Ethically non-controversial stem cells have been used in at human applications for least 73 diseases—including diabetes.
H.R. 881 (Hunter, R-CA); H.R. 227 (Broun, R-GA) – The Right to Life Act and The Sanctity of Human Life Act define human life as beginning at fertilization/conception. (Also includes human cloning.)
