District Judge Has Ordered Planned Parenthood
To Appear In Court To Face 107 Count Criminal Complaint

RELEASED OCTOBER 18, 2007 – Planned Parenthood has come under scrutiny once again, this time for criminal abortion practices, including 23 felony counts in the state of Kansas. A 107 count criminal complaint was filed by Former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline in his current role as Johnson County (KS) District Attorney. Charges against Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri include unlawful abortion and other crimes. After reviewing the evidence presented, Johnson County District Judge James F. Vano found probable cause on each count filed and ordered the Planned Parenthood to appear on November 16, 2007 at 1:30 pm in Johnson County District Court. If convicted, the Planned Parenthood could face more than $2.5 million in potential fines.

“While these criminal charges have been filed against an abortion clinic in Kansas, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. has more than 850 abortion facilities around the country. It is the responsibility of government officials to investigate whether this is part of a larger pattern of illegal activity,” said Heartbeat International President Peggy Hartshorn, Ph.D. “Planned Parenthood claims to provide legal abortions. But, this case alleges that abortionists affiliated with this tax-exempt corporation will perform illegal abortions for profit just like the back alley abortionists they claim to have replaced.”

“The evidence in this case is strong, documented, extremely detailed, and backed by experts,” said Dr. Hartshorn. “Given the serious allegations of criminal activity by this federally-funded business, taxpayers have a right to demand justice. Clearly, taxpayers should not be forced to fund the illegal activity of a multi-million dollar, not-for-profit organization whose treasure chest holds close to a billion dollars ($839.8 million in net assets as of June 2006). The practices of Planned Parenthood facilities nationwide need to be examined. If Planned Parenthood provides abortions that do not meet legal or medical standards, is women’s health really their priority? We are genuinely concerned for the safety of the women and children who submit to Planned Parenthood procedures across the country.”

Heartbeat International’s network includes pregnancy resource centers, maternity homes, non-profit adoption agencies, and medical clinics.
