My precious journey
|
I would describe my life as a precious journey, now that I am at a place of support. I discovered the Northwest Center Pregnancy Center and Maternity Home in January, 2011, when I found out I was pregnant. At that time, I was a full-time student working diligently towards my B.A. in Art as well as working full-time. Two months later, I was terminated from my now previous employer after four years of employment. I was forced to move from my home by my landlord, unless I chose to be taken to Planned Parenthood by the landlord’s “trusted friend” to abort my unborn child. On March 18, 2011, I moved into the comforting, welcoming home of the Northwest Center Maternity Home, located in Washington, DC. I soon received the help of staff and volunteers who supported my choice to choose life at a time when my family and the father of my unborn child did not support my choice. Along with losing hope, a home and a job, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, requiring me to administer insulin three times a day. I am grateful to the Northwest Center Maternity Home for assisting me at the time of my diagnosis and beyond. When I thought all else was against me, I had the Northwest Center in my corner to shine light. After giving birth to a healthy baby boy via Cesarean Section in July, I returned to the maternity home. The staff and volunteers helped me with the baby, with meals, and with getting to appointments. Despite everything that went on during that time, it didn’t prevent me from achieving my goals: delivering a healthy baby, performing community service, staying involved with my church, attending college, and participating in collaborative art projects. I now have some family support but the father of my child is not involved in his son’s life. I am returning to college this month and plan to graduate in December. In giving back to the community, I volunteer at a local nonprofit to assist with art related activities for youth. I continue to be an active member of my church. Upon completion of the Northwest Center program, I hope to settle into my own home. Most importantly, I am nurturing, loving mom, supporting my son independently! |
