Samuel Alito Confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court

January 31, 2006 – The United States Senate voted to confirm Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court by a 58-42 vote. Justice Alito will replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and his confirmation is being hailed as a victory for the pro-life community.

A last-minute effort to halt the confirmation process by a small group of pro-abortion Senators suffered a crushing defeat when 72 Senators voted to allow a full Senate up-or-down vote on the nomination.

Senators shared their thoughts following the confirmation vote:

“During his Judiciary Committee hearing, Samuel Alito showed America that he met the criteria President Bush outlined and the American people endorsed in the last election: he will remain faithful to the text of the Constitution and will not legislate from the bench.” - Senator Sam Brownback (KS)

“I’m pleased 57 of my colleagues joined me in voting to confirm Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.  Over the course of a rigorous confirmation process, Judge Alito proved himself to be a man of stellar character, great intelligence and judicial restraint.”
- Senator Tom Coburn (OK)

“The Senate sent a powerful message Monday by voting nearly three to one to reject the use of a filibuster and to hold a fair up-or-down vote. And we set an example for future nomination debates by rejecting those who would block a nominee simply because he doesn’t have a political platform that fits the demands of the liberal lobbyists.” - Senator John Cornyn (TX)

“Judge Alito has the most judicial experience of any nominee to come before the Senate in over 70 years, and I applaud his bipartisan confirmation to the Supreme Court. The consistent winner in his court has not been a person, business, branch of government or political ideology – it has been the rule of law. During 30 years of public service and 15 years on the bench, Judge Alito has proved to be a humble, thoughtful and fair judge all Americans can be proud of.” - Senator Jim DeMint (SC)

Heartbeat International would like to thank all of the pro-life individuals and organizations that worked to encourage a fair hearing and a successful confirmation vote for Justice Alito.

“He is the consummate professional and shows a deep love for justice. His reputation as a fair-minded and even-tempered judge precedes him and should be encouraging to all Americans.” -Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council ( 10/31/05 )

“Sam Alito has a good record of being a strict constructionist, of being a strong believer in the Constitution.” -Wendy Wright, Concerned Women for America ( 11/1/05 )

“By nominating Samuel Alito, Bush hopes to send our country back to a time before civil rights, before Roe v. Wade…” -Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women (NOW) (11/10/05)

“Judge Alito would undermine basic reproductive rights, and Planned Parenthood will oppose his confirmation.” -Karen Pearl, interim president of Planned Parenthood ( 10/31/05 )

“Mr. Alito proudly endorsed the Reagan administration’s aggressive anti-choice agenda, and made clear that he supports the legal argument that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided.
