Lydia A Beating Heart - Macedonia
Lydia – A Beating Heart is the first and only pro-life pregnancy resource center in Macedonia. In Macedonia and throughout the Balkans abortion is used without second thought as the primary form of birth control. Often, when we ask a woman why she wants an abortion, she simply shrugs her shoulders and says she doesn’t really have a reason, it just seemed like the thing to do because she wasn’t planning on getting pregnant at this particular time.
Another difference in Macedonia from most situations in the U.S. is that most of the women having abortions already have a family. It is very anti-cultural to have more than two children, three at most, so most women abort all pregnancies after the first two. Many women will have had several abortions over the course of their lifetime. As of 2013, there are some laws in place restricting abortion. If a woman is less than 12 weeks pregnant, she is required to wait 72 hours, have counseling and get an ultrasound. If she is over 12 weeks pregnant, she must obtain the signatures of three physicians approving the abortion.
We are so grateful for this law, but we also know that there is much to be done towards applying the law, as well as working to change the cultural concepts surrounding abortion and adoption. The Lydia Center is dedicated to counseling and helping women while promoting the value of life and the baby’s right to be born. Our goal is to love, support, and assist women facing unplanned pregnancies, post-abortion trauma, and other family-related crises. We also aid impoverished women by giving out donations of clothing, diapers, and other baby necessities.
One morning in March 2015, our advisor went to the hospital to talk to a young woman who was going to have an abortion. The woman was ready, and the anesthesiologist was waiting to start the procedure. Even though there were only a few minutes, our counselor was not discouraged. This was a woman who needed information. She needed someone to listen and to tell that abortion can be harmful.
After a brief conversation, she realized that there is no reason as great and important as the importance and value of the life of her child and her own health. With the help and support offered by us, she was encouraged to cancel the abortion. Several times the nurse came and called to enter the room, but the young woman was unable to move. Finally, she made a decision – she would not abort! She decided to face her challenges and to fight her circumstances and to give her unborn child a chance to live. This mother never regretted her decision.
In December of 2015 little Mary was born. This brave mother later told us that on the morning she was going to have an abortion, her mother-in-law begged God on her knees in her room to save her grandchild. God heard her prayer.
