Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What is Sexual Integrity Essentials?

Answer: Heartbeat International’s Sexual Integrity™ Essentials is a new manual designed to equip your center with the tools you need to develop your own Sexual Integrity program.

The manual includes:

  • A comprehensive review of the Sexual Integrity concept and program.
  • A companion CD with key tools for use in Pregnancy Help Organizations.
  • An in-depth explanation of the Four Biblical Pillars of Sexual Integrity.

Question: What is the difference between Sexual Integrity Essentials and the Sexual Integrity Implementation Manual?

Answer: Sexual Integrity Essentials is a streamlined version of the Sexual Integrity Program Implementation Manual. Sexual Integrity Essentials is more concise, easier to read, and gives you the key information you need to develop a Sexual Integrity program in your center.

Sexual Integrity Essentials:

  • Provides an overview of the concept of Sexual Integrity,
  • Guidelines for creating a Sexual Integrity program in a center,
  • Covers the importance of the Four Pillars,

And includes the following materials:

  • Relationship surveys.
  • “What about Your Future?” questionnaire.
  • “Your Choices Affect your Future” chart.
  • “STDs Hurt Real People” chart.
  • Guidelines for a successful book club.

SIP Implementation Manual

  • Emphasizes the need for a Sexual Integrity program,
  • Provides resources to get a program started,
  • Introduction to the Four Pillars,

And includes the following materials:

  • Relationship surveys.
  • “What about Your Future?” questionnaire.
  • “Your Choices Affect your Future” chart.
  • “Benefits of Marriage for Women and Children” chart.
  • “STDs Hurt Real People” chart.
  • Invitation to Sexual Integrity DVD.
  • When God Writes Your Love Story by Eric and Leslie Ludy
  • Single Men Are Like Waffles; Single Women Are Like Spaghetti by Bill and Pam Farrel
  • The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
  • “Why Marriage Matters” pamphlet created by the Institute for American Values.

Question: I have the SIP Implementation Manual. Do I need the Sexual Integrity Essentials manual?

Answer: If you already have the SIP Implementation Manual, you do not necessarily need Essentials. Essentials streamlines the program to provide a more concise, easier to read format that gives you the key information you need to develop a Sexual Integrity program in your center. Just as you are free to pick and choose which materials from Heartbeat you use when creating your Sexual Integrity Program, you are also free to choose which manual you choose to use as your primary manual for staff and volunteers.

Question: How long has Sexual Integrity Essentials been out?

Answer: Essentials was first published in November 2012.

Question: Can I still use the other tools I've purchased for the Sexual Integrity Program at my center (DVD series, Brochures, Charting resources, etc.)?

Answer: Yes, Sexual Integrity Essentials provides guidelines for how you can utilize all the resources Heartbeat International has developed as part of the Sexual Integrity Program. Essentials also includes guidelines for selecting additional resources to best suit the unique needs of your center and your clients.

Question: If we've already been trained using the SIP Training Workbook or SIP Implementation Manual do I need to retrain my staff?

Answer: Since the principles of Sexual Integrity are expressed in all of Heartbeat's Sexual Integrity materials, it is not necessary to retrain your staff on Sexual Integrity Essentials. However, to be sure your staff has the latest information related to Sexual Integrity, we recommend that any new staff be trained using Sexual Integrity Essentials. An online training for Sexual Integrity Essentials is available through the Heartbeat Academy.

Question: Do I need to be formally trained?

Answer: No, you don’t need to be formally trained in The Sexual Integrity Program to utilize these resources. We do, however, recommend formal training, whether on-site at your center or at Heartbeat International’s Annual Conference.

Training will help you understand the bigger picture of Sexual Integrity, show you how the Sexual Integrity Program works, teach you how to use all the tools with clients, and give you a good start in implementing the program in your center. Executive directors and others have said formal training has helped staff and volunteers feel more confident working with clients.

A supplementary online training for Sexual Integrity Essentials is also available through the Heartbeat Academy. If you already have the program, but have never been formally trained, contact usfor more information.

Question: What if I have questions?

Answers: We have answers. Heartbeat International’s experienced consultants are available when you have questions or need guidance. We are here to answer your questions to equip you with the tools you need to utilize the Sexual Integrity Program. Contact us for more information by calling (888) 550-7577 or by clicking here.

Question: Is this training the same as Natural Family Planning training?

Answer: Heartbeat’s definition of fertility education is not natural family planning, nor is it helping women achieve or avoid pregnancy. Fertility education is simply teaching a woman how her body works so that she is empowered to respect her body. When women understand this powerful gift they are:

  • more likely to choose life for their baby.
  • more likely to stop premarital sexual activity.
  • more likely to make wiser choices with men.
  • more likely to respect their own bodies.

Program Materials

Education that teaches young women the truth about their bodies so they are empowered to reverence and respect their body.

The Sexual Integrity™ Program (SIP) includes a variety of resources to be used from the very first meeting through additional interactions. The materials have all been designed, produced or chosen to support the four foundational Biblical Pillars:

SIP Biblical Pillars:

Pillar One:
Pillar Two:

Pillar Four:

A Focus on Relationships (Genesis 1:27)
A Focus on Marriage (Genesis 2:24)

Sexual Integrity

What if every client in your center learned:

SIP Couple

  • To respect her body…
  • To understand the ingredients of healthy relationships…
  • To achieve sexual wholeness…
  • To value life…

How different would her decisions be?

What has been missing in our culture for too long is the “big picture” of Sexual Integrity™– passing a message of sexual wholeness, purity, and passion from one generation to the next.

The Sexual Integrity™ Program is designed to teach women how to walk in sexual wholeness in all areas of their life – physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual. This biblically-based program is a valuable tool inside the pregnancy resource center.

Benefits of implementing The Sexual Integrity™ Program

  • Stronger client outcomes.
  • The ability to continue building the relationship with all of your clients week after week.
  • A reduction in the number of return pregnancy tests visits per client.
  • Women empowered and educated to make healthier choices with their bodies, reducing sexual activity outside of marriage. Therefore, reducing the following:
    • Abortion
    • STDs/STIsSIP girls-color
    • Other health risks associated with STDs/STIs and abortion
    • Out-of-wedlock births
    • Single-parent families
    • Fractured families
    • Divorce
    • Miscarriage
    • Premature births
    • Poverty
    • Domestic violence
    • Child abuse
  • Evangelization opportunities increase as you spend more time with clients, and they learn more about God’s blueprint for sexual integrity.
  • Your center’s reputation enhanced as a provider of more complete reproductive health education.
  • Volunteers well-trained on the major topics related to sexual activity, and, therefore, more confident in their interaction with all clients.

360 Center Assessment

360 Center Assessment"Our organization was seen with new eyes and the discoveries were extremely valuable."

This 360º Center Assessment is Heartbeat International’s endeavor to bring a fresh yet seasoned perspective to the efforts of your life-affirming organization. Heartbeat involves several staff members in a penetrating look into the various fundamental, formational, and future-oriented aspects that shape the ministry and its outcomes.

Though this is not an exhaustive review, it is an extensive one that looks in-depth at the core areas:

  • Financial
  • Services
  • Marketing
  • Leadership/Organization/Staff
  • Fundraising
  • Legal

"On a scale of 1-10, the 360 Assessment ranked 10++. The results of this process exceeded way beyond our hopes."

Our team spends many hours, in advance of a two-day on-site visit, reviewing documents, analyzing various points of data, gathering additional information, and preparing specific questions for the on-site evaluation. All of our observations, commendations, and recommendations are compiled into a report presented to the governing leadership (board and ED/CEO).

"The assessment is amazing. You found things that we would have continued to miss."

Perhaps the strongest identifier of a good organization is good leadership. Leaders are learners. Good leaders constantly seek to improve. The 360° Center Assessment is designed with this in mind.

"The Heartbeat representatives had great insights, a world of knowledge and a tender heart in presenting their findings."

The cost for this assessment for Heartbeat affiliates is $1,500 plus the expenses for at least two consultants to come on-site. (For very large multi-site/multi-program organizations, additional consultant(s) may be needed to complete the effort with a two-day visit.) Non-affiliates cost is $1,800, plus expenses.

A Local Launch of "A Passion to Serve, a Vision for Life"

Pregnancy Center Report Spotlights the Contribution of Heartbeat Affiliates

Even though little Emma Grace was conceived by teens – regularly a death sentence under the rule of Roe v. Wade – her parents, with the help of the Pregnancy Care Center, welcomed her, with all her inherent value, into their newly formed family.  Ahna and Garrett Roney were seventeen and eighteen when they chose to marry and to make a family with the infant they welcomed.
The Roney’s story about Heartbeat International’s affiliate in Springfield, MO is a testament to how practical help and emotional support for a young couple can turn a difficult time into a much-welcomed blessing.

This is just one of the examples of the life-saving work of Heartbeat International’s compassionate network of care highlighted in “A Passion to Serve: How Pregnancy Resource Centers Empower Women, Help Families, and Strengthen Communities,” the updated report from Family Research Council (FRC).

A Passion to ServeThis report shines a light on the positive contributions of pregnancy centers, maternity homes, adoption agencies and pregnancy help medical clinics. These faith-based nonprofits brighten a woman’s future with the support she needs to bring new life into the world.

While tracing the history of concern and care for pregnant women, this report focuses on the positive ways pregnancy support organizations are strengthening their communities. It describes the impact of the pregnancy help movement by detailing, through statistical summaries and case studies, the extraordinary ways centers are meeting the needs of women, youth, and families.

Pregnancy centers served over 2.3 million people with pregnancy assistance, abstinence counseling and education, community outreach programs and referrals, and public health linkages. A conservative estimate of community cost savings for these serves during 2010 is over $100 million, according to the FRC report.

The report also includes endorsements from public figures like this one from U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipinski, (D, IL-3):

“The success rates and national expansion of these pregnancy care centers are a testament to their invaluable work in the lives of communities and individuals over the years. These networks provide services that are often unavailable elsewhere to expectant mothers.”

The pregnancy help network is one of the greatest volunteer service movements in the history of our country with around 71,000 volunteers performing an estimated 5,705,000 uncompensated hours of work in 2010.

Public Impact

Heartbeat International proactively engages the community and shares the good work of the pregnancy help movement with both the media and government officials.  Through proper education of all the services our pregnancy help network provides in communities, we encourage hopeful messages of LIFE throughout the world. Our Babies Go to Congress event takes moms and babies to their government officials to show them the value of the pregnancy help organizations.  We do this to encourage a positive relationship among our elected officials.

While we do what we can to be proactive, Heartbeat is prepared to help defend organizations against attacks from the opposition.  Our pregnancy help network agrees to the standards of our Commitment of Care and Competence.  If you ever feel that you or your center is under attack, please contact us.

We suggest our affiliates work with their local media so they can better work with centers in the community.  Heartbeat provides a Pregnancy Help Center Defense Toolkit (Affiliates Only) to equip our centers with the tools they need to work with the media.  Education is the best tool we have against any negative claims that may arise.
