 About the Training

A large and growing body of research using good methodology shows that abortion places women at increased risk of mental health problems. This workshop will give attendees/nurses an overview of what current research is showing, from PTSD and substance abuse to sexual dysfunction and relationship problems.

Objectives: 

  1. Discuss risk factors that place some women at higher risk of developing mental health problems after abortion.
  2. Discuss diagnostic criteria for PTSD.
  3. Discuss examples of PTSD symptoms in post-abortive nursing clients.
  4. Discuss research on PTSD after abortion.
  5. Discuss research on problems that clients and their partners may experience after abortion.
  6. Discuss basic interventions that can be provided by nurses for post-abortive clients.
  7. Discuss referral resources for post-abortive clients.

About the Presenter

Dr. Martha Shuping, M.D., is a 1984 graduate of Wake Forest University Medical School, and completed a four year psychiatry residency at the university medical center in 1988. She additionally earned an MA with a focus on pastoral counseling.   Dr. Shuping practices psychiatry in Winston-Salem, NC, and has more than two decades of experience in helping women and men to recover from the effects of abortion. Dr. Shuping is co-author of several published studies on women's mental health and abortion,  and has spoken on this topic several times at the United Nations. She has provided continuing education for nurses, physicians and counselors in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. She has provided training and consultation for abortion recovery centers and pregnancy resource centers in more than a dozen countries. Dr. Shuping has also written a self-help book for abortion recovery, The Four Steps to Healing, which is available through Amazon.

 

Refund Policy

1. Refunds for non-attendance will only be awarded if non-attendance is the direct result of an unplanned or unannounced outage. When a registrant is unable to access a webinar/course due to an unplanned or unannounced server outage of Heartbeat International Academy, the HeartbeatInternational.org website, or HeartbeatServices.org website, Heartbeat International will contact the registrant to notify them of the refund due them and issue the refund. Refund will be made to the registrant within 1 week of the cancelled event subject to processing fees.

2. When a course/webinar is cancelled for which individuals have registered, Heartbeat International will send a notification to each registrant per email or phone. Full refund will be sent to registrant within one week of cancellation.
